Residents of Panadura say that the authorities have neglected to repair the pedestrian path along the railway bridge built over the Bolgoda River near the Panadura Railway Station.

A few days ago one person had fallen off the decayed planks making up the bridge, and died. Thousands of school children and people cross the bridge on a daily basis. Residents say that many people, including school children, have fallen off the bridge on several occasions.

The issue is the dilapidated condition of the section set up for people to traverse the bridge.

People who cross over the bridge daily pointed out that the river banks have also collapsed due to erosion.

“Nobody comes to inspect the bridge, despite us informing the related authorities to repair it,” a local added.

People say they have to walk three kilometers if they choose to take a different route instead of going over this bridge.

Residents are hoping that new planks will be put in place of the rotten ones on the bridge.
