Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, who represents the Galle district, has told the Galle Fort Civil Protection Committee that he has been assured by Cultural Affairs Minister Vidura Wickremanayake that foreigners will not be asked to purchase a ticket for US$15 to visit the Galle Fort ramparts.

Concerns had been raised by residents, businessmen, and members of associations in the Galle area regarding such a move. Last Sunday, a meeting was held at the Shri Sudarmalaya temple, at which Minister Pathirana, monks from the temple, representatives of civil associations, and businessmen were present.

Galle Fort Civil Protection Committee chairman told the Sunday Times that the meeting was successful since Minister Pathirana promised them that he would not let anyone make a move that could affect the livelihoods of those who depend on tourism to the area.

He said that the minister had stated earlier in the day that he had spoken to the Cultural Affairs Minister, who had assured that foreigners would not be charged. “In conclusion, the minister reiterated that entering the Fort or accessing the ramparts will remain as they are now, and no charges will be introduced. He said he would be with us throughout, like in past issues.”

Galle Fort Business Association chairman Madhu Mihiraj, who also spoke to the Sunday Times, said the minister had assured that the rampart area would remain a ticket-free zone.

He said last week the Sunday Times, quoting him, said he wouldn’t mind if a small amount was charged from foreigners, but that was not his position.
