In a remarkable display of talent and dedication, the Curtin Colombo swimming team delivered an outstanding performance at the APIIT Extravaganza 2023 sports tournament, further emphasising their collective achievement. Among the standout stars was Anusara Abeygoonawardane, a Year 1 engineering student, who secured first place in all three swimming events, showcasing both his individual prowess and the exceptional team spirit within the Curtin Colombo swimming team, brilliantly led by their captain, Jonathan de Seram.
The APIIT Extravaganza 2023 featured competition from 13 universities across the country, creating a highly competitive environment for student-athletes. Within this challenging arena, Anusara’s achievements shone brightly, leaving a lasting impression of awe and admiration.
In the individual medley event, Anusara exhibited blazing speed and impeccable technique, clinching the gold medal and leaving his competitors trailing behind. His impressive journey extends to his participation in renowned international competitions, including the Asian Age Group Championship in 2023, the 18th Singapore National Swimming Championship in 2023, the 8th FINA Junior World Championships in 2022 and the South Asian Aquatic Championships in 2019.
Notably, Anusara has not only excelled at national and international stages, but has also established Sri Lankan national records in events such as the 800m Freestyle, 4x100m Medley Relay, and 4x200m Freestyle Relay, further solidifying his status as a swimming prodigy.
