NLDB’s fresh milk project takes off

In a bid to promote the consumption of fresh milk among city dwellers, the National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) has launched a mobile milk distribution programme targeting residents of apartment complexes and government housing schemes in Colombo city and suburbs.
NLDB chairman Prof. H.W.Cyril said fresh milk collected daily will be made available for the residents.
“The Health Ministry this week said malnutrition levels are high among children and pregnant women both in rural and urban areas. Not consuming milk is also a reason for child malnourishment,” he said.

Currently mobile vehicles equipped with milk cooling tanks are deployed to Elvitigala flats, Anderson housing scheme, Torrington housing scheme, Helamuthu, Ranmuthu, Methsada sewana flats, kamkarupura flats, Nawagampura housing scheme, National Housing Scheme (NHS) Borella and a number of government housing schemes.
The milk is also being distributed to apartments in Wellawatte, Kollupitiya, and Jaela.
“Residents in apartments can collectively make a request for a specific time and days of the week for delivery. Distribution starts from 6 am. There are morning and evening sessions,” he said. 
A litre of fresh milk is sold at Rs.300. Residents can bring their own utensils or purchase a re-usable glass bottle at an additional cost.
“We have also just begun a door-to-door distribution in Colombo city with two motorbikes that have cooler facilities. For this door-to-door service customers need to order fresh milk and or other products above Rs.2000,” he said.
