A special extensive Dengue control programme has been launched in Kandy ahead of the Esala Perahera.

A surveillance programme was carried out from Wednesday to Friday in Kandy as part of the campaign.

The National Dengue Control Unit, of the Ministry of Health inspected government institutes religious places, schools, and public places in Kandy.

The unit said, of the 31 premises 15 were positive and 46 positive breeding places were found positive for primary vector Aedes aegypti, which is the major mosquito for dengue transmission.

‘Most of the positive breeding places were removable with minimal efforts. Furthermore, from the conducted adult mosquito surveys, both females and male mosquitoes of the primary vector were found in the sacred temple of the Tooth relic’, a report from the NDCU said.

The unit has called the Regional Director of Health Services in Kandy to take all necessary corrective measures ahead of the Esala Perahera.

Meanwhile in the rest of the country the rise in the number of dengue patients being reported has been reduced, the latest statistics showed.

As of today, close to 59,000 dengue patients have been reported island-wide. whereas, the highest number of patients has been reported in the Gampaha district. Province-wise, the Western Province was recognised as the most dengue-prone province.

A Spokesman for the National Dengue Control Unit told the Sunday Times that continuous dengue awareness and control programmes are being conducted by the Medical Officers of Health regarding this matter.

He emphasised that the public should take the initiative to clean up their premises. Also, public places like places of worship, schools, offices, and other public gathering places must always be kept clean to reduce the spread of dengue. By cleaning the places of stagnant water, dengue spreading could be reduced.
