A decision has been reached to release 1.5 million cubic metres of water from reservoirs for drinking purposes next week, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) Deputy General Manager Anoja Kaluaarachchi said.

The decision has been conveyed to the Irrigation Department. It was taken to save water in upper catchment areas, including the Maussakelle Reservoir, and meet drinking water requirements, she said.

The decision was reached at the water management committee meeting held on Friday.
