Littering mars once-scenic Pelawatte story and Pix by Indika Handuwala

The scenic and ecologically-sensitive area around the Pelawatte Lake in Pelawatte, Battaramulla, overlooking the tri-forces headquarters as well as numerous supermarkets and offices is fast becoming a  dumping ground for garbage and a gathering place for miscreants.

Polythene, plastic and glass bottles, leftover food packets, beer cans are among the litter left in piles by irresponsible persons who frequent the area. A recently constructed multi-storeyed building attracts the public who come as audiences for various shows and leave all their garbage behind when they return home. By nightfall, the area becomes a place for boozers who leave behind beer cans and alcohol bottles along with leftover food.

A road which the Sri Lanka Army uses as a parking area for buses that transport its personnel has worsened the situation, with many who spend the day in the area leaving rubbish behind, posing serious health risks from illnesses such as dengue and malaria,  and inconveniencing others who use the road for their walks as well as children who come to cycle.

The Kaduwela Municipality limits are among the worst affected by the spread of dengue fever and the socially irresponsible behaviour of the public as well as the lack of concern by  authorities and businesses  that operate in the area, who do little by way of social responsibility to keep such miscreants in check means a scenic and  an ecological sensitive area is being put under more threat than has already happened due to the high level of urbanisation in the area.
