Enhanced cash rewards for info on illegal firearms

Police Chief C.D. Wickramaratne yesterday announced significant increases in monetary rewards given to police officers and informants who help track down and seize illegal firearms and grenades.

Initially, the new reward scheme will apply to illegal firearms and grenades seized from June 25 to July 31.

As per the new reward scheme, a police officer who arrests a suspect along with a T56 firearm will receive Rs. 250,000 while an informant will also receive the same amount. A police officer who locates an illegal T56 firearm will receive Rs. 200,000 while an informant will be paid Rs. 250,000 for providing the information.

Informants will also receive Rs. 250,000 for providing information leading to the seizure of an illegal pistol or revolver, while police officers will receive Rs. 100,000 for locating the firearms and Rs. 150,000 for arresting a suspect along with them. Informants who help locate foreign made automatic weapons will receive Rs. 200,000 while officers will receive Rs. 100,000 for such weapons and Rs. 150,000 if they also arrest a suspect.
