University students, especially those studying law and criminology, are encouraged to apply for a unique university ambassador national programme launched by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) in collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC).

University internal students in their 2nd and 3rd years are able to join the programme following approval from the Head of the Department, University Registrar and the Vice Chancellor.

The main objectives are to get university students involved in the decision making process of child protection, to get advice to draft policies on child protection, and to get contributions to advise the Government.

Volunteers will also get to create awareness about the national policy on child protection among university students to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes on child protection, and to get suggestions and participation of university students to prevent child abuse.

“Over 300 university students have applied for this programme. We have, therefore, extended the deadline till May 31. Students from State and UGC approved universities are able to apply for this voluntary programme,” said Lakshika Menikbowa, Assistant Director (Media) of the NCPA.

Among the applications received to-date, the highest number of applicants are from Sri Jayewardenepura University, followed by Colombo University’s Law Faculty and the Kotelawala Defence University.

“As this is a voluntary programme, the students will receive bronze, silver and gold line certificates depending on their years of dedication and commitment to this programme. This is a beginning of a 20-year sustainable programme with the intention to promote child rights protection among future leaders and decision makers,” she said.
