An unmarried couple who had abandoned a 13-day-old infant in the toilet of an express train was arrested by police yesterday.

Police said they used CCTV footage at the Fort railway station to locate the couple who had left the infant in the“Meenagaya” train bound to Batticaloa.

Police said the 25-year-old father who had kept the baby in the toilet was a resident of Meeriyabadda area Koslanda and he was arrested by the area police.  The 25-year-old mother was arrested by Bandarawela police.

Bandarawela Chief Inspector Nishantha Kumara said the suspects would be produced in Bandarawela Magistrate’s courts.

The couple had spent the last four months in Colombo and the woman had given birth to a baby boy on February 25 at a hospital in Colombo. She had reportedly handed over the baby to the father of the infant before returning to her hometown, Bandarawela.

The baby is currently at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children. Hospital Director Dr Santhushitha Senathipathi said the baby who was handed over to them by the Fort police was in good health.

He said if no one comes to claim the baby, child care assistance would be sought.

However, according to police, the mother had showed interest in taking care of the infant.

She had told the police that they had dressed up the infant and placed him in a baby career in the hope that someone would take care of him.
