MOULDING A PRESSURE PROOF MIND
View(s):A mother of a seven year old daughter told me that whenever they advised their daughter of any wrongdoing, the child would always say that she would leave their house. I explained to the mother that it is merely because the child has only been fed with sweets that when she had to consume the bitter medicine she could not accept it, it made her feel extremely uncomfortable. Just as a chocolate will be consumed as a sweet so will the Kashaya (An Ayurvedic Sri Lankan medication) be consumed bitterly. Just as human’s need to be accustomed to live in the winter as well as in the summer, we all should train ourselves to have a pressure proof mind so that we stand still and be well focused amidst joy and tears.
Pressure and comfort are similar to sweetness and bitterness. Just as the sun plays a prominent role during the day so does the moon at night. One cannot say the moon is not needed and the sun is sufficient for the existence of the world. A human needs to be awake as well to be asleep. You would not know what coldness is unless you have experienced the heat. The first enlightenment we require is that we need both pressure and comfort in our lives. Nevertheless, amidst the pressures in life, we will attempt to run away from life like the aforementioned little girl. This is the reason I always say that failure is the best university that one must attend in life as it moulds, strengthens, corrects, polishes and redirects us towards the utmost purpose of our lives.
A town that is not well protected with a strong wall can easily be captured, that is why in the good old days the cities in Israel had large and thick walls. Many people struggle before the pressures in life as the walls of their minds are thin or their minds are too open and vulnerable to attacks. In the ancient times if you intend to win the war you must possess a strong wall, powerful weapons and a strong human force. Yet, today even just one strong statement from your boss could lead you to stagnate at one point for a few days. Protect your mind, strengthen the capacity of your mind and build up a strong personality. Then, you are certain to move upward and forward in life.
In order to achieve this level, first, train your mind to seek self-appreciation over craving for external appreciation. People struggle as a result of not liking themselves. They have not learnt and practiced to like themselves. I am madly in love with myself hence I do not crave for appreciation from others. Yet, of course I feel good when someone appreciates me. Yet, I have made it a point not to run after external appreciation. Receiving an iPhone as a surprise gift is indeed an awesome feeling. However, expecting an iPhone and receiving a lampshade is a miserable feeling.
Personality rarely comes as a birth right, for many it is a committed effort of laser sharp focus. I was born as a very weak, angry, easily giving up and highly sensitive person. The fires and storms I went through made my mind a pressure proof one. I am indeed thankful to all the girlfriends who left me like a piece of garbage. Those rejections, thickened the walls of my mind. Whenever you go through fires and storms, count them all in joy as it is moulding you towards a pressure proof mind. I am also thankful to everyone who laughed at me when I mentioned that I wanted to win the award as the Best Sri Lankan for CIM – UK, they indeed strengthened my focus. Every time they laughed at me, it was an additional opportunity to remain focused.
I am also happy about the many job interviews that I failed, all of it, preserved my ability to remain still without collapsing. The reality is that there will come a day that our children will leave us and go on their own journeys leaving us in solitude. Therefore, it is important and advisable for both you and I to practice loving ourselves more whilst having a coffee with ourselves on a regular basis.
Another strategy to develop a pressure proof mind is to coordinate with a group of brains which are strong in their thinking and productive in their attitude. When you run with the fast runners your legs will automatically be trained to run fast. Similarly, when you coordinate with the wise and positive minds, you will also elevate yourself to their level. Unfortunately, what many are doing is that they coordinate with small minded people, merely to receive their praises about themselves. We do not want people who say we are smart when we are fat.
We want people who will say that we are fat and that is not good hence, we need to work out until we acquire a healthy body. Thundering advice is to Gold as Bogus Appreciation is to imitation metal. A collection of electric batteries will undeniably provide more energy than a single battery. A heard of buffaloes can even chase away a few hungry lions. Therefore, sit along with the strong & good minded, coordinate with their brains so that you would derive the best out of a good mind. One fine day you will also begin to transmit energy to the weak.
A pressure proof mind only needs a can do, will do and will not give up attitude. That is the reason why encouraging your children to do sports and extracurricular activities are extremely important. We as a country are stagnating in a muddy pit not only because of the corruption of the politicians but it is also due to the corrupt mindset of our people who always think they can’t do it, will not do it and will give up easily type of a mentality. I have resided in many developed countries including Australia and the USA, yet for me this is a paradise subject to earning according to what is needed to live in this paradise. Earning is your job, do not live expecting from anyone at any moment.
If your mindset is as such that you think the government should give you free education, free medicine, fertiliser subsidy, electricity below cost, fuel cost as less than the purchased amount and other similar free gimmicks, then you are bound to sink in even for the slightest wind. A boat must not collapse amidst the storms. The Sri Lankan mindset is genetically dependent as our great grandfathers have also been dependent on the food token, fertiliser subsidy and other similar rewards.
Even though people shout at beggars they are not different from the beggars as they also constantly beg from the government. Undoubtedly, it is the responsibility of the government to take charge of the accurate justifications for the people’s taxes. Yet, if and whenever they do not do it, people should begin to cultivate in their life’s gardens. The walls of your mind will be rigifoam as long as you live as a slave in life expecting others to feed you.
Therefore, work and practice towards a pressure proof mind. Always live your life consciously knowing that the enemy might attack you at any moment. Go through the fire if you have to. Do not escape from the fire, the fire would teach you to walk through the heat. Life will always be at a high temperature. Unless you train your mind to absorb the heat and pass through the heat you will never have a pressure proof mind. You will always give up in life. Giving up will not offer you a trophy. Only completion will enable you to receive the prize.
