Possible collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Sri Lankan universities

On the invitation of the Dean of IIT, Sri Lanka Consul General in Mumbai Dr Valsan Vethody met to discuss possible collaboration this week, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

Dr Vethody met with Deputy Director Prof K V Krishna Rao and Dean of International Relations Amit Agrawal and discussed the possibility of opening an IIT campus in Sri Lanka.

The institute showed keen interest in engaging with more universities in Sri Lanka. The Consul General also spoke about scholarships and fellowships Sri Lankan students and discussed ways to increase the number of Lankan students at their IIT campus.

The Dean explained the structure for fellowships and stated that all expenses would be borne by the institute. Moreover, the fellowship offers a stipend to students over and above the costs that are covered by the institute.

Upon being informed of the annual faculty conferences of the IIT, the Consul General proposed holding future  conferences in Sri Lanka, as the country offers excellent MICE facilities.

The Consul General and Consul (Commercial) of the Mission, Sandun Sameera met with the heads of departments – many of whom had worked as consultants for projects in Sri Lanka. The head of each department gave a brief overview of the activities under their purview and explained how Lankan students would benefit from studying at their campus.

The deputy director and the dean were willing to initiate further discussions for a mutually beneficial collaboration at a local level. The Consul General invited IIT representatives, including the dean, to the upcoming Sri Lankan Food Festival organised to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka hosted by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai in collaboration with JW Marriot.
