The SLIA Architecture & Trade Exhibition 2023 showcased innovative and sustainable construction solutions, and the students of CSA presented a groundbreaking design concept that centered around the idea of up-cycling underutilized materials in the industry. The modular construction design was made from recycled metal and electronic waste, with the aim of introducing an up-cycling method as a possible alternative to existing recycling methods.

The students selected electronic waste and aluminum as the primary materials due to their high durability, structural strength, recyclable capacity, and complementary aesthetics when combined. The use of aluminum cans, the largest single-use of aluminum globally, and obsolete computer parts shed light on the huge amounts of daily disposal that go unnoticed.

The hexagon module, constructed with cans, was inspired by the iconic beehive structure interconnected in a spider web pattern, resulting in high compressive strength and harmonious material combination. The application of biomimicry is observed both aesthetically and structurally, creating a harmonious and sustainable design.

The components constructed meaningful spaces that focused on spatial quality and sensory stimulation, with the CPU’s creating spatial progression, a keyboard ‘’flooring’’ that promotes sensory stimulation, and suspended LCD panels that create a play of light and shadow. By reusing obsolete computer parts, it shed light on the ‘invisible’ digital infrastructures that connect people to a futuristic reality.

The process of collecting the materials needed for construction was tireless, with materials being collected from eateries, licensed waste collectors, garbage sites, and from students themselves. The collection process, which took only two weeks, resulted in the collection of 30,000 cans and 500+ CPUs. The exhibition served as an opportunity to raise awareness about meaningful material and construction practices, where leading individuals and organizations can take part in design solutions to initiate up-cycling methods for a brighter and better future.

In conclusion, the CSA students’ modular construction design showcased at the SLIA Architecture & Trade Exhibition 2023 was a testament to sustainable and innovative design solutions. The use of recycled metal and electronic waste highlighted the importance of meaningful material and construction practices, which can lead to a brighter and better future
for all.
