The Asian International School Rowing Crew returned home with a tally of 24 medals from their Pakistan mission

The rowing crew of Asian International School (AIS) participated in the 15th annual KBC International Inter-Schools Rowing Regatta 2023 organised by the Karachi Boat Club, Pakistan returned home with a tally of 24 medals, including three golds. AIS came on top at the Outdoor Rowing Championship held from February 2 to 5, with three gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals.

Rovinya Wijesekera won the gold medal in the Under-18 Single Scull Girls’ event while Shaylon Gunaratne won the silver medal of the Under-18 Single Scull Boy’s category. Shaylon also claimed the award presented for the Best Rower in the Under-18 Boys category.

Shivanedra Goonewardene won the bronze medal in the Under-21 Single Scull and the gold medal in the Under-18 Double Scull teaming up with Shaylon Gunaratne. The Girls Quadruple Under-18 team comprising of Rovinya Wijesekera, Nethuki Senanayake, Shana Abbas and Arwa Rehmanjee, won the silver medal. The Boys Under-18 Quadruple Scull team of Daanish Haleemdeen, Inesh Peiris, Chanul Vithathanage and Raed Carder, won the bronze medal and the Under-18 Boys Coxed, which also included Nethuki Senanayake, also won the bronze medal of the event.

Shaylon Gunaratne won the gold medal in Under-18 male 2000m and Rovinya Wijesekera also won a gold and set a new record for 2000m in the Under-18 female category in the Indoor Rowing Championship. Shaylon Gunaratne and Shivanedra Goonewardene set a new record and bagged the gold medal for the 1000mx2 Relay while Nethuki Senanayake and Arwa Rehmanjee received the bronze medal for their efforts in the 1000mx2 Relay for women. Altogether, AIS won four gold and two bronze and set two new records at the Indoor Championship January 28.

Over 600 athletes from 24 schools worldwide attended this event, and the AIS team was represented by 10 members under the guidance of coach Vasantha Nirmal.
