From silver jewellery to gemstone healing therapy and gem heating techniques, Alexandra Gem Exports Company has now forayed into gas- fired mini gem heating furnace production, head of the company W.C Jayawardana told the Business Times.

The company is currently test-marketing/experimenting the product, and depending on the market response, plans to roll out the mini gem heating furnace for the benefit of budding gemologists and gem traders, he divulged.

One of the Geuda (semi-precious stones) heat treatment pioneers of Sri Lanka, Mr. Jayawardana said that he is now passing his knowledge to the next generation of gem industrialists by conducting gemology classes and technical sessions for youth who are keen to enter the gem business.

He was among the first persons to have successfully heated a gem corundum in order to improve its colour and clarity.

There were no parties involved in the research relating to this specific area in the mid-seventies, Mr. Jayawardena told the Business Times.

He added that he had been able to discover the secret of the Geuda value addition process through his experiments with the assistance of the then Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISISR) and the British High Commission in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has made many great strides in the gem corundum business at present following the acquiring of knowledge in transforming Geuda into high value precious stones such as Blue sapphires, White Sapphires, Rubies and Yellow Sapphires while heat treating it under either reducing or oxidising conditions.

Mr. .Jayawardana, a BSC degree holder of Vidyodaya University (now Sri Jayewardenepura University in 1971, started his career as a teacher and later gave up teaching to carry out gem business and his experiments in gem heat treatment after obtaining a Diploma in Gemology from the University of Moratuwa.

Gem-stone healing therapy is an alternative medical technique in which crystals and other gem-stones are used to cure ailments such as blood sugar, arthritis, joint pains, headache and stress and protect against disease, he added.

Mr. Fernando explained that crystals and gems act as conduits for healing — enabling positive, healing energy to flow into the body as negative, disease-causing energy flows out.

The company is also designing and producing gem-studded silver jewellery reflecting latest trends for the European market especially for Germany, Mr. Jayawardana disclosed.

The company’s in-house designers and artisans have designed and turned out an impressive collection of silver jewellery – earrings, brooches, rings, bracelets and necklaces – that showcases both the creative talents of the people working in the sector and the country’s resources of precious gems, he emphasised.
