Gateway students win Gold Awards at the Young Computer Scientist Competition

Students of Gateway College won gold and silver medals at the Young Computer Scientist 2022 Awards Ceremony that was held recently at the Ministry of Education under the patronage of Hon. Susil Premajayantha, the Minister of Education. The Gold winners were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the upcoming Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA Awards).

Ahmed Zaakir Fazlan was placed first place in the Junior Section -2 (age 14 to 16 years) in the International School category. He was also ranked among the top 6 at the YCS competition and will be representing Sri Lanka at the APICTA 2022 which will be held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Zaakir Fazlan created an Affordable Virtual Reality multi player experience as an Android Application that uses Unity and Photon service along with the Google Cardboard SDK.

Preyan Anuraj won the third place in the same category with his free educational website, that contains animated videos, quizzes and past papers, to help revision and the learning process. The website was created using HTML, CSS and Java.

Sanudaya Dissanayake, Ananthakumar Akaash and Bilal Ruzmil were placed first in the Junior Section -1 (age 10 to 13 years) in the International School category. They developed Buddy, a personal virtual assistant developed by python using AI concepts.

The YCS competition is organised by the Federation of Information Technology Industry of Sri Lanka (FITIS) annually in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).

This year the competition was held for the 21st time. Over the years, Gateway students have been featured amongst the top and many have represented Sri Lanka in international competitions. The competition is modelled on the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA Awards). This year’s competition saw over 500 applications across a wide array of fields encompassing Internet of Things (IOT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and Big Data Analytics.
