Education sector trade unions who have been involved in a long drawn-out protest demanding a salary revision, said since their demands have been met in the 2022 budget they will discontinue their agitation.

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union said that the nearly four-month old protests countrywide have ended and they will resume teaching as normal.

“We will prepare students for the upcoming national exams”, the union’s General Secretary Joseph Stalin said. Schools have opened up for grades 1 to 5 and grades 10,11, 12 and 13 in the last three weeks.

The education trade unions however were to meet yesterday to decide on their future course of action. “We will monitor the progress to ensure our demands are met as promised.” Mr Stalin said, adding that the Education Ministry has to send out circulars pertaining to the salary revisions. The Budget has pledged to allocate an additional Rs. 30 billion for the salary revision. This is in addition to the current allocation of over Rs. 109,000 million for the salaries of teachers and principals.
