A decision about re-opening schools across the country will be taken today after consultation with health authorities, an Education Ministry official said.

The schools which were re-opened on April 19 were once again closed following the surge in COVID-19 patients reported countrywide.

The Government said it is reviewing the situation and a decision to re-open will be taken today.

Schools re-opened after a week of first term holidays for the Sinhala and Tamil New year and were once again closed within days following a surge in COVID-19 patients reported among students.

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said schools have been closed for over a year  because of the pandemic and yet the Education Ministry has failed to come up with a concrete plan to provide education to school children.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said it is important for the Government to come up with an alternate plan to continue the education of the 4.3 million school children in the country.

“The future of the children is at stake because of inaction of authorities,” he said. (CC)
