Long term plan for preschools: Minister

The Government is planning to offer financial benefits to develop preschools in the country under a long term plan.

Women and Child Development, Preschools & Primary Education, School Infrastructure & Education Services Minister Piyal Nishantha said that under the plan the teachers are due to be paid a monthly allowance.

He said funding will also be provided to develop the preschools. He said initially teachers will be paid an allowance of Rs 2,500 and the Government hopes to improve the payments on an annual basis.

Currently some 45,000 preschool teachers are registered with the government.

The Government also plans to provide Rs 700,000 each for the preschools, they can put up new buildings or buy equipment.

However if the Government provides funding they will be regulating the preschools by introducing syllabuses, to ensure standards, the Minister said.

Currently there are 19,666 pre-schools registered with the Government.
