Starting from tomorrow, farmers in the north will receive compensation of Rs 40,000 for an acre of paddyland destroyed by the recent floods.

“Approximately 9200 acres of paddy fields were destroyed due to the floods,” Kilinochchi District Divisional Secretary Sundaram Arumainayaham told the Sunday Times.

He said around 1500 acres of vegetable and fruit cultivations too were affected and these will also receive compensation.

Meanwhile, many of those who lost their homes due to the floods are still housed at temporary makeshift shelters.  The National Housing Development Authority has begun building around 4000 houses each costing Rs 750,000.

Restoration work on partially damaged buildings is also underway following an assessment report compiled by six teams.

The Road Development Authority (RDA), Road Development Department (RDD), and the Pradeshiya Sabhas in the north are engaged in restoring roads up to 700 kilometres that were damaged by the floods.

Reconstruction of 18 water tanks is also underway under the directives of the Agrarian Service Department.
