The government is to build a bridge across the Kokkilai lagoon in the Mullativu and Trincomalee districts that would enable easier access between the north and east along the coastal line. With loan negotiations to take place with the Czech Republic, the project is to be completed within three years, Road Development Authority Project director, L.U.D. Atapattu said.

The one km-long bridge is expected to reduce the travel distance from Mullaitivu to Pulmoddai, by 100km. The bridge that will be jointly funded by the CSOB bank in the Czech Republic and a local commercial bank, is estimated to cost Rs. 9 billion.

Mr. Atapattu said people now have to go by boat around the lagoon if they are travelling from Trincomalee to Jaffna, and the bridge would make transport a lot easier.
