A Chinese national was briefly detained by police in Kollupitiya on Friday after he behaved in an unruly manner at the newly opened premises of a prominent optician.

The man had initially walked in during the opening ceremony and attempted to buy a pair of spectacles. He had become unruly after he was told that the branch would only open for business after the ceremony was concluded. Police had to be called in to control the situation and the man was detained briefly. However, he was subsequently released without charge.

In an interesting turn of events, the man then turned up at the opticians with a bagful of Rs 5000 notes, which he began to distribute to those in the vicinity.

It is unclear whether he subsequently purchased the spectacles he had initially wanted.
