Cabinet approvals for the Education Sector

Cabinet this week approved the following proposals:

  • By Science and Technology, Research, Skills Development & Vocational Training and Upcountry Heritage Minister Dr Sarath Amunugama for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sri Lanka and Seychelles, to improve academic research training, exchange of staff, and development of capacity and joint activities of students.
  • By Higher Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha, to secure Rs 26,400 million for development and improvement of Physical and Human Resources in the Universities of Kelaniya, Sabaragamuwa and Rajarata to open 3 Faculties of Technology.

This decision follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) identifying 10 Universities to award Degrees in Technology and Science streams.

The securing of funds is expected to take place from 2018-2023.

  • By National Integration, Reconciliation and Official Languages Minister Mano Ganeshan to establish a Tamil medium National school in the Kelaniya Educational Zone, for Tamil children of Gampaha and Wattala areas. Government has named the school Arun Manikkawasagam Hindu Vidyalaya.
