Dr. Prabath Liyanaarachchi Chief Medical Superintendent of the Debarawewa base hospital said, the hospital had suspended clinics for patients from Thursday due to a shortage of doctors.

According to Dr. Prabath while the hospital needed 52 doctors to function, today only 31 doctors serve at the hospital. He said under these circumstances it had become near impossible to even treat OPD patients and as such he was compelled to stop conducting clinics.

He added that despite having informed the relevant authorities of the problem, his pleas had fallen on deaf ears. Five doctors from the Hambantota General Hospital who were due to arrive at the base hospital had still not reported for work he added.

While surgeries and other treatment would continue, he said he was forced to close the clinics as patients from distant areas were being inconvenienced, wasting time and money as clinics at his hospital were not fully functional.
