The Government has approved a proposal to have 15 urban parks, including recreation areas, in selected towns.
Rs1.5 billion has been approved for the project to be carried out by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development in Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya.

Chairman of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Jagath Munasinghe told the Sunday Times that the projects are similar to the ‘Diyatha Uyana’ in Battaramulla and they hope to complete the projects during 2018. He added that UDA or state lands will be used for the projects which will be open to investment from the private sector as well. ‘The urban parks will include an area where locals will be able to sell products popular in that respective place, so that it attracts tourists as well,’ he said.
