President Maithripala Sirisena has reassured the Palestinian people that Sri Lanka would stand by their struggle for independence.
The President’s assurance came in a reply to a letter sent by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinian leader, in his letter, has thanked the Sri Lankan President for gifting a plot of land in Colombo for a new embassy. The embassy now operates from an old building in Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.

President Sirisena’s letter said, “It is with great pleasure that I acknowledge the receipt of your letter, appreciating the gifting of a plot of land in Colombo to the embassy of Palestinian people, making another milestone of our longstanding friendly relations.

“Sri Lanka continues to support the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and their right to an independent, sovereign state based on relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. Sri Lanka is committed to maintain continuous cooperation with the state of Palestine for mutual benefit of our two peoples.”
