Half tons by Dhananjaya de Silva who was unfortunate to miss out on a ton by nine runs, skipper Jeevan Mendis, Sithara Gimhan and Manoj Sarathchandra helped Tamil Union pile up a mammoth score of 413 for 8 in 90 overs against Ragama CC on day one in the Premier League cricket encounter played at P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

Tamil Union opener Tharanga Paranavithana was trapped lbw by Amila Aponso (not in picture) in an unusual fashion at the P. Sara Oval - Pix by Ranjith Perera

Dhananjaya hit a 91 with 15 boundaries, Jeevan cracked 82 in 93 balls that included 11 boundaries and a six while Sithara made a 76 with nine fours and Manoj chipped in with a 59 that had eight boundaries.

Tamil Union was in line to post a big score in the early stages of the match when Dhananjaya associated in two fruitful partnerships of 58 runs for the first wicket with Pabasara Waduge and the other of 117 runs for the third wicket with skipper Jeevan for Tamil Union to go into lunch on 218 for 4.

The post lunch session saw a 94 runs stand for the fifth wicket between Manoj and Sithara followed by a 63 runs stand for the sixth wicket between Sithara and Ramith Rambukwella bolster the score for the home side.

SLPA CC left arm spinner Chanaka Komasaru along with left and right arm pacie and spin combination of Chaminda Bandara and Aravinda Premaratne wrecked CCC’s batting to bundle them out for a meager 92 in the Premier League cricket encounter which began at CCC ground yesterday.

At one stage CCC skipper Sachith Pathirana winning the toss and electing to take first lease of the wicket was reeling on 30 for 5 before useful knocks from Sachith and Andy Solomons saved them.

SSC paceman Dasun Shanaka took four scalps

Chanaka ended with impressive figures of 6 for 29 while Chaminda and Aravinda shared the other four wickets.

However the match is poised for an interesting finish as CCC spearheaded by skipper Sachith who ended with a five wicket haul fought back to bowl out their opponents for 128. CCC batting the second time ended the day on 108 for 6.

Colts helped by half tons from Hashan Dumindu and Sadeera Samarawickrama ended day one in a strong position against Badureliya SC in the match played at BRC grounds.

Hashan made a top score of 86 while Sadeera hit a 65 with the pair putting on a stand of 50 runs for the second wicket after Sadeera and Kanchana gave a sound start of 65 which laid the foundation for Colts to end the day making 315 for 7.

Half tons by Rumesh Buddika, Nisal Randika and Chamara Silva enabled Galle CC to put a formidable score of 341 for 5 against SSC at the end of the first day’s play in the match played at SSC.

Saracens SC batting first were 252 for 7 against Chilaw Marians at the FTZ ground in Katunayake while exchanges were even in the match between Army SC and NCC at Panagoda. The matches will be continued today.
