Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera on Friday said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe had forwarded a proposal recommending a constitutional change to Sri Lanka Cricket, but, it will be affected only after the new cricket administration is voted in on January 3 (today). He said that the constitutional change is a must and it could be either moved by the membership or through an Act of Parliament. However the Sports Minister reiterated that all such moves would be made according to the ICC norms and specifications.

It is learned that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the ICC has agreed to postpone the election for one year and to draft and effect the new SLC constitution within a period of one year. However, Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera told the Sunday Times “I was not aware of the recommendations of the Prime Minister, to the ICC. All the arrangements have been made to go ahead with the elections under tight security and he has got the approval of President Maithripala Sirisena.”

Meanwhile government spokesman Minister Sagala Ratnayake told the Sunday Times “Once the elections are over, a five member apex body will be appointed to monitor the newly elected board’s activities. The apex body will comprise two members from the cricket board and three from the government. When the new constitution is being drafted the body will have to seek ICC technical assistance” he said

Mohan de Silva from the Sumathipala faction commenting on the constitutional changes said “We cannot make a comment without studying the contents of the proposals, but, added that they would support any agenda that is mooted for the betterment of the game of cricket’

Meanwhile Nishantha Ranatunga’s observation was “The changes to the constitution must be done periodically, but, they should be affected with the consultation of the stakeholders. However, there are so many things that have to be affected towards the betterment of the game and we hope to work on them.”

On Thursday, all candidates whose nominations for contesting for Executive Committee membership of Sri Lanka Cricket at the elections were rejected under clause 11 of the constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket now will be allowed to enter the fray, after all parties agreed in the Supreme Court that objections raised against such candidates with be withdrawn.

From Thilanga Sumathipala’s camp the theme would be the ‘The six pointer’. According to Mohan de Silva of the Sumathipala camp, they would publicise and adopt a six point working paper once they get the mandate at the end of the show of hands.
Nishantha Ranatunga’s team theme will be ‘Pathway to success through stakeholders’.

As per the constitution the SLC AGM will have 147 votes. The breakdown reads as – Controling Clubs 29 x 2 = 58. Affiliated Clubs 23 x 1 = 23. Provincial Associations 5 x 2 = 10. District associations 22 x 2 = 44 and Associations 6 x 2 = 12.
