Students backed by the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) took to the streets this week protesting against moves to restrict ‘free education’ in the country, by promoting private educational institutions.

Students from several universities marched from Sri Jayawardenapura University to the University Grants Commission (UGC) office in Colombo 7, holding up traffic for several hours.

The students distributed leaflets to the public, calling for their support for the campaign, saying that, in previous instances, Government withdrew proposed Bills on the Private Pension scheme and the Private University Bill, due to public protests.
