The Government spent Rs 69 million for the two-week orientation programme for new entrants to State universities in 2012, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s annual report.

The orientation programme helps students to adjust to higher educational group interactions and developments, the 2012 Report stated.
Overall, the expenditure on higher education in 2012 was Rs 20.8 billion, from Rs 15 billion in 2007, while the student intake increased from 20,069 in 2007 to 27,710 in 2012, the Report added.

Salaries to university staff has increased almost twofold, from Rs 7 billion in 2007 to Rs 11 billion in 2012, mainly due to the increased allowances paid to academic staff, as well as the introduction of a research allowance, the report said.

Meanwhile, the Government had increased its expenditure in the Skills Development and Vocational Education sectors too, from Rs 4.7 billion in 2007 to over Rs 7 billion in 2012.

The total intake of students into State-run training institutions such as technical colleges and vocational training institutions too has increased from 75,200 in 2007 to over 144,902 in 2012.
