A Maldivian resort is under fire over claims that it removed kettles from the rooms of Chinese tourists “to stop them cooking instant noodles in kettles in their rooms”.
According to a report in the New York Times (NYT), allegations on Chinese websites and blogs against the resort also referred to staff designating Chinese guests as ‘CN – not for China, but for “cup noodle.” As Chinese people get richer they are traveling far more; in some markets they are challenging numbers from more traditional markets like Japan, Europe and the United States, including in shopping spending, the report said.
“But their behavior has come under some scrutiny from their own government, which has in the past called on Chinese tourists not to behave in ways that may be acceptable at home but may attract negative attention overseas. Commonly cited examples include cutting lines and spitting, even talking too loudly and moving around in large groups,” it said. A travel agent in the Maldives handling Chinese travellers, said many of its bookings had been cancelled at this resort due to concerns raised by travel agents based in China. The resort has however denied the claims saying Chinese visitors are always welcome. It was alleged that Chinese guests were not only cooking instant noodles in kettles but also using it to boil crab, fish and shrimps.
