Curtains coming down

The Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 competition

It’s just four days away before the curtains come down. May 24 will be the last day our readers get to cast votes on their favourite schoolboy cricketer as the Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 competition. As Thurstan skipper Sajeewa Salgado reached the 20,000 mark this week Angelo Jayasinghe is placed in a vulnerable position. Jayasinghe of Maris Stella is given a close threat by De Mazenod all-rounder Shiran Anuruddhika who managed to close gap behind 315 votes in the penultimate week.

Anuruddhika received the most number of votes for during the ended week which was 2945 while Jayasinghe received 1851. The number of votes these two cricketers receive during the final week will be crucial as for their final standing in the competition. Leader Sangado who received 1853 votes has 20,773 overall. The rest of the line-up of All-Island category remains unchanged. Royal Panadura team mates, Charith Ruchiranga and Madhawa Fernando, Zahira’s Lakshan Edirisinghe, Kavindu Ashan of Royal Panadura, St. Joseph’s Dishan Dissanayake, St. Peter’s Thanusha Jayawardane, and S. Thomas’ skipper Sachin Peiris are placed one after another respectively.

The Emerging Schools category has become the stronghold of Sasindu Perera, the skipper of St. John’s Panadura. Last week too he received 340 votes which make him the clear leader ahead of others. He leads by 1700 votes ahead of Tharindu Guruge of President’s College Kotte who has an overall count of 1422. Mohamed Shilmi of St. Anthony’s Boys School Panadura is just 363 votes behind Guruge at third slot.

From the International Schools category, Lakshan Kodagoda of Gateway has received 33,647 votes, which is the highest in the whole competition. Kodagoda virtually has sealed his mark in the International Schools category despite Nishan Perera of Lyceum Nugegoda reaching 20,364 votes. Amjad Ifthikar of Leighton Park has been on the rise during the past couple of weeks and has managed to stick on to the third position of the category. Readers have the last opportunity to give their favourite schoolboy cricketer the opportunity to shine by sending in as many coupons as they wish before the deadline of May 24.
