Ana Punchihewa withdraws from race

SLC Elections on January 3, 2012
By Daminda Wijesuriya

In a dramatic turn of events, former BCCSL president Ana Punchihewa withdrew from contesting at the SLC elections, due to personal reasons yesterday. Former DIG, Jayantha Paranathala has signed the nomination papers as a Vice President candidate from the Thilanga Sumathipala faction.

K. Mathiwanan is seen handing over the list of nominations from the Dharmadasa party to the Director of Sports, Ranjani Jayakody. Jayananda Warnaweera and Hirantha Perera are also seen in the picrure - Pix by Mangala Weerasekara

The battle to seize the hot seat of Sri Lanka Cricket Headquarters is getting hot as the Upali Dharmadasa camp handed over their nominations. Vice Presidential candidate, K. Mathiwanan handed over the list of nominations, signed by other relevant candidates. Upali Dharmadasa was out of the country when the nomination papers were handed over.

The director's office at the ministry of sports, which is usually closed on Saturdays, was kept open yesterday to receive the nominations. There were two blank lines in the nomination list from the Dharmadasa party. Nominations for the posts of secretary and treasurer were vacant as if they were trying to negotiate with some of the high ranking officials at the last moment.

However, it's understood that the nomination for the post of secretary will not be filled. The house will decide who the secretary will be on January 3, 2012. Former Interim Committee secretary, Nishantha Ranatunga confirmed last week that he will be contesting for the post of secretary as an independent candidate.

Director of Sports, Mrs. Ranjani Jayakody confirmed yesterday that there are some more nominations for the post of president but she can't remember the names. Amidst several other names. Sumith R. Perera of Baduraliya CC has also given his nomination for the post of president at SLC.

The number one rival of the Dharmadasa party, former BCCSL president Thilanga Sumathipala said that he is going to handover the nominations on Monday. Before he and his team meets president Mahinda Rajapaksa tonight. A member of the Sumathipala party said that such a step will be taken to inform the head of the state officially that he (Thilanga Sumathipala) is going to contest at the next SLC elections and to get the President's blessings for the campaign.

Sumathipala will meet the Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage too, before handing over the nomination papers. The nominations will be closed by 12.00 noon on Monday. It's understood that a respected former official has not yet taken his final decision of which party he is going to represent. He is waiting for the arrival of Upali Dharmadasa, who was not in the island last morning, to deliver the final verdict.

However, members of Thilanga Sumathipala team are confident that they can count on the former official who had been in the cricket board since the early eighties. K. Mathiwanan, who handed over the nominations, said that Sri Lanka Cricket is at a crisis and it's everyone's duty to come and serve them at this crucial stage.

In the meantime, keeping many of their opponents guessing, candidates for four sub committees were handed over to the director general of Sports on Friday. The most interesting scenario here is that A. R. M. Arooz has apparently forwarded his name from both parties. When asked about fielding two nomination papers, Arooz said that he is supported by clubs from both parties and it is up to the members of the clubs to decide at the elections. "I have support from most of the clubs. I'm confident that I'll win from any party" Arooz said.
