Instriago- carving a platform for budding musicians

By Shaveen Jeewandara

A soothing cello tune picks up against the backdrop of a moving violin piece, equalized by a choir that takes perfection to the next level. A remedy like no other, to the day’s bundle of worries, music takes life in the most harmonious of ways. We all have that musician inside us longing to carve a melody, but caught up in a whirlwind of vocation; many a musician inside us lays down the bow.

To revive that musician, to create a solid platform for the budding artists and to take music to a whole new realm – is what the Young Music Council of Sri Lanka aspires to achieve through “INSTRIAGO 2011”
Organized for the second time by the Youth Music Council of Sri Lanka, which is a youth initiated organization with a vision to empower budding young musicians, “INSTRIAGO 2011”, sets it’s standards as the most sought after music competition in the School arena. With it’s resounding success last year, hopes to garner a larger crowd at this years finals.

“The participation at the preliminary rounds was immense, we even had to set out a separate date for the semi-finals due to the large number of bands that partook”, says Prishani De Mel, the Vice President of the Youth Music Council. Being extremely cheerful at that feat, Prishani goes on to explain to us the objective behind the concept “We aimed to provide a platform to students and young musicians to exhibit their talents at an early stage, in a competitive yet friendly environment, thus providing the foundation to their music careers”.

This year the competition was not restricted to school bands, this paved way for many open bands to perform. The quality of music was nonpareil, with music ranging from the contemporaries to pop culture. “The bands were really up there, and moreover we had a lot of fun, INSTRIAGO is also about having a lot of fun and just enjoying the bliss of music”, Prishani adds. The preliminaries were held on the 10th of September at St.Peters College, much to the glee of the organizing committee, the enthusiasm shown by the bands was extremely high. The Youth Music Council also carries out other service projects such as western music workshops for Ordinary and Advanced level students from outstation schools, and also brings down renowned foreign musicians to bask the youth population in a sea of musical knowledge.

The tunes and harmonics of “INSTRIAGO” deem to be a fun-filled event for the youth and would also undoubtedly soothe your senses in relaxing music – the ultimate vacation for the soul. The final rounds of the competition will be held on the 16th of October at the British School Auditorium, Colombo 08. The event promises a lot of talent and potential, and definitely seems to be the way forward in empowering the youth music arena in Sri Lanka.
