THINKCube unveils Telco Cloud Computing products

By Bandula Sirimanna

Sri Lanka’s Information Technology services are still typically built around hardware sales with the country’s computer hardware market is estimated at US$265 million this year and projected to reach around US$489 million in 2015.

The market is dominated by demand from government, finance and telecoms sectors, which accounts for at least half of total spending, IT sector officials revealed. IT services are estimated at around US$74 million in 2011, accounting for about 17% of Sri Lanka´s total spending on IT, they said.

However, the domestic software market is expected to grow at around 20% until 2015, they predicted.
Under this environment, ThinkCube Systems (Pvt) Ltd, an Access Group ICT Company, is now promoting Cloud Computing Solutions for telecommunication providers, to enable them to lead the industry with innovations which will drive tomorrow’s telecom services, Mithila Mendis Chief Operating Officer of the company told the Business Times . He noted that cloud computing solutions could be a transformative software delivery model for Sri Lankan enterprises.

Outlining the benefits of cloud computing, he said that the majority of cloud computing infrastructure currently consists of reliable services delivered through data centres that are built on computer and storage virtualization technologies. The services are accessible anywhere in the world, with ‘The Cloud’ appearing as a single point of access for all the computing needs of consumers.

As customers generally do not own the infrastructure, which are generally accessed or rented, they can forego capital expenditure and consume resources as a service, paying instead for what they use. Many cloud computing offerings have adopted the utility computing model which is analogous to how traditional utilities like electricity are consumed, while others are billed on a subscription basis, he revealed.

THINKCube's solutions allow the telecom operators to break-away from their traditional role of being a communication provider to becoming an ICT provider to target markets. Mahendra Kumarasinghe, a Director of ThinkCube with 23 years of experience in the fields of IT and Telecommunications said that . Sri Lankan IT professionals are more innovative, and they are very much better than their Indian counterparts for innovative solution development.
