Soldiers dominate opening day

Teams from armed forces impressed with skilled performances at Sri Lanka’s inaugural handball national championship which got underway at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo yesterday.
Sri Lanka Army dominated the handball nationals with two inspiring wins against Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and Batticaloa in one sided games. Sri Lanka Air Force are on their way to the title dominated with two commanding wins against SLTB and Trincomalee.

In the women’s category Sri Lanka Air Force take over the reigns in the first ever top level competition in the country with two dynamic wins against Ampara and Sri Lanka Navy.

A total of 15 teams representing districts, armed forces and governmental institutions participated in the first ever national level championship hosted by the Handball Federation of Sri Lanka (HFSL) which was formed in 2007. In the men’s category teams from Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Galle, Army, Navy, Air Force, Prisons and Transport Board fielded teams. The women’s tournament was represented by Ampara, Batticaloa, Army, Navy and Air Force.

The finals of each category will be played today commencing from 4.00pm at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. The awards ceremony will take place at 6.00pm.
