Ramzeen all set to restore Trinity rugby this season

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Murad Ramzeen, the tough prop forward who leads the Trinity rugby team this year has quite an exciting brief. It is his arduous task to restore the sheen to his college’s rugby after a mediocre season last year when they finished in sixth position.

The first leg of the Bradby in Colombo was lost by a single point (37-38), but the second ended in a much more emphatic and a convincing win for the boys in blue, gold and blue. Apart from the Bradby, Trinity also lost to S.Thomas’, St. Peter’s and St. Anthony’s.

The College authorities predictably made changes in the coaching staff – New Zealander Neil Foote is in overall charge of Trinity rugby, while former Sri Lanka Sevens specialist Nilufer Ibrahim is the Head Coach of the First XV. Kandy SC flanker and old Trinitian Dilip Selvam assists Ibrahim.
New brooms sweep well and the prognostics are promising. Last week in the season opener, the Trinitians beat the Anthonians 10-3. This win should give Ramzeen’s boys a lot of confidence as the Anthonians generally provide stiff opposition.

The two coloursmen in the team are the skipper and lock forward Sachintaka Perera. Fly half Rehan Weerakoon is the vice captain. Trinity has been going great guns in cricket over the last two seasons, but generally Trinity is synonymous with rugby. Justifiably so, when you think of great rugger players of yester year who added luster to the oval ball game at Trinity.

Ramzeen fondly looks back on the 2009 season, his first, where they were upstaged by the Joes in the lung opener. He recalls with pardonable pride that they finished the season on a high, defeating Isipathana, Kingswood and Dharmaraja. The Trinity squad is as follows –Props – Murad Ramzeen (Capt), Inzamam Mubarak, Thimira Galappatige, Anuradha Karunatilleke.

Hooker – Kevin Bandara.
Flankers – Savinda Unambuwa, Prian Fernando, Ujith Weerakoon, Thushara Warapitiya.
Number Eight – Sean Foster.
Scrum Half – Rehan Weerakoon. Centres – Kaneel Seneviratne, Dilshan Kelaniyangoda.Wingers – Thisala Krunatilleke,Sanchana Sheik, Mohammed Sashan, Kanishka Yatawara. Full back – Duminda Nayakaratne.

Thomas’ (Away); April 24 – Kingswood (Pallekelle); April 30 – Science College (Palekelle); May 6 – St. Joseph’s College (Away); May 14 – Wesley (Pallekelle); May 21 – St. Peter’s (Away); May 28 – Bradby First Leg (Bogambara); June 4 – Isipathana (Pallekelle); June 11 – Bradby Second Leg (Away); July 2 – Thurstan (Away); July 9 – Dharmaraja.
