Teachers’ Union cries foul at irregular transfers

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) condemned the illegal manner in which teachers have been transferred by the Chief Minister of the Western Province, while teachers who have forwarded legitimate transfer applications are still on the ‘Waiting List’.

“It is a violation of the National Teacher Transfer Policy 2007/20 and Section 3 of the Constitution, as these transfers violate the teachers’ right to equal treatment”, said Secretary of the CTU, Joseph Stalin
Eight hundred and forty seven formal transfer applications were forwarded to the 11 Zonal Education Offices in the Western Province, to be executed for 2011, and the CTU claimed that 212 teachers have been transferred due to favouritism by the Minister, while more qualified teachers await transfer.

Secretary Stalin said that 139 transfers were made according to the guidelines of the Constitution, while the rest of the qualified teachers in the priority list awaiting transfers, are neglected. “There are several transfer applicants who have worked in the same school for more than 15 years, anticipating transfers to a school in their hometowns”, he explained.
