Seven Tamil parties unite for polls

By Chris Kamalendran

Seven Tamil political parties have come together to contest the upcoming local government elections in the north and east under the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) – a constituent party of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

The decision was taken at a Colombo meeting attended by constituent members of the TNA and several other parties. They included the TULF, the PLOTE, the EPRLF (P) and the Tamil National Liberation Alliance (TNLA).

TNLA General Secretary N.K. Sivajilingam said that after several rounds of talks with the TNA, all the parties were able to reach a consensus to contest together. “We will all contest under the ITAK’s house symbol,” he said.

It will be the first time that elections are being held to many local councils in the Wanni, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts since 1987.

However, Minister Douglas Devananda’s EPDP and Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan’s TMVP will field candidates on the UPFA ticket.

Among the Pradeshiya Sabhas to which elections will be held are those of Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, Nallur, Vadamarachchi, Valikamam, Delft, Kayts, Mannar and Vavuniya.
