D.S. Senanayake College Colombo 7 which has gained a reputation from its inception in 1967 as a disciplined school maintains one of the best primary in the island. The primary section of D.S. Senanayake College has been categorized as a model primary by the Department of Education.

It has provided the children with the best of facilities with the assistance of the parents. The state-of-the-art computer room, the Arunalu building for aesthetic studies, the swimming pool and the Carbon Neutral project are a few.

Mr.D.M.D.Dissanayake. Principal of D.S. Senanayake College- Colombo 7

The facilities provided for the children at school are some of the best in the island. The principal Mr.D.M.D.Dissanayake stated that discipline originates from Grade One. If we can inculcate discipline in Grade One, then the rest of the career in school will be disciplined.

A child with a disciplined background will prosper not only in studies but also in other extra-curricular activities. It is a multi ethnic, multi religious college with an unblemished and prestigious record of excellence in academic activities, sports and community leadership having produced highly innovative and patriotic individuals.

The primary which has a student population of 1500 is handled by skilled staff, whose guidance, patience, tolerance, devotion and inspiring attention extended to the children is greatly appreciated by the administrative staff and parents alike. Mr.Dissanayake says the new teaching method is being done with the objective of developing children to cope with the requirement of rapidly changing environment.
As new projects for the school in 2011, the annual art exhibition for the children in the primary will be introduced to develop analytical skills. All languages and spoken English skills will be developed by teachers skilled in languages. This is essential today for the children to develop brotherhood with all communities. The principal has instructed all teachers in the primary sector to call the children "PUTHA" instead of the names, as per the culture of the school..

The annual drama pageant for the primary sector known as "ARUNALU"has made remarkable progress in the development of extra-curricular activities. This concert has been designed to allow all children in the primary to participate in many activities. Singing, dancing and debating are some of the events designed to develop a child's ability to perform on stage. It relieves them of stage and psychological fear as they grow up. This project inculcates the necessary values to the children from the inception of their school career. The events displayed at the ARUNALU by the children are forcussed on peace, harmony, brotherhood, helping the needy and "placing the country before self".

Added to the many activities to develop the primary sector is the introduction of "The go green project". The project consists several phases to give a green culture to the primary sector through a mixture of environment friendly improvements to the infrastructure and "Best Practices" to be installed in the students. Some of the projects are:

  • A rain walk to connect all main buildings that will also include flower beds.
  • Construction of a "Quadrangle" open air meeting place-with shade giving trees and a waterfall" to bring tranquility and aesthetic harmony.
  • Four different types of mini gardens to improve the facade in front of the classrooms and provide an interaction point with others.
  • An adventure park/ play area to help with skills development.
  • A new mini basketball court.
  • Upgrading the washing room and toilets to the standard of British schools.

The aim of many projects that would be undertaken by the school development society and the Old Boys' Association is to give the children an environment closer to nature and free of pollution says the Principal.. There is also a vegetable and fruit garden adjacent to the primary, which will complement the new surroundings as children see a school gradually transformed to a greener verdant environment. Under this project the children will be taught to maintain a home garden, grow trees, and keep the environment clean.

D.S. Senanayake College primary maintains a state-of-the-art well equipped sickroom with doctors on duty on a daily basis. All parents who are doctors provide the medical facilities to the children with a clear concept "Health of the children is the wealth of the Nation".

The education development society has installed many projects know as "Brain Developments Projects" for the children to develop intelligence under the vision 'twenty programmes' of the school.
