Train smashes lorry

Story and Pic by Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe

A lorry was badly damaged when an express train from Puttalam to Colombo crashed into the vehicle at an unprotected level crossing in Mangala Eliya. The incident occurred at about 5 am yesterday.

The lorry driver jumped out of the vehicle in time, leaving the lorry on the rail track. All trains on that line were delayed yesterday as a result of the accident. The unprotected level-crossing has been the scene of a number of accidents in the past.

Train derails injuring 3

Three people were injured when a Colombo-bound train derailed near Kompanna Veediya last morning. One of the derailed compartments hit the wall of a house adjoining the track.

The three persons injured included a 16 year old girl. They were in the house at the time of the accident.
The incident occurred amidst government plans to evict those living adjoining the rail track.
