‘Jana Sabhas’ to empower people

The Government will shortly set up ‘jana sabhas’ island-wide and hope to give membership in them to opposition members as well,” Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He said the ‘jana sabhas’ which have been proposed under President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election manifesto will enable the public to utilize their money for their own well being as well as bring together the people’s representatives and officials together to address the people’s problems.

He added that the views of the people would be sought before the President makes a final decision about implementing the ‘jana sabha’ system.

Mr. Rajapaksa made these comments when he addressed the Kurunegala District Coordinating Committee meeting.
