While favourite Sharya Guruge took the girls’ under-19 title, Binura Jayasooriya surprised everyone by defeating former champion Gihan Suwaris in the boy’s under-19 event at the Ritzbury Junior Squash Nationals that concluded at the Gymkhana Club courts yesterday.

Guruge had a somewhat comfortable win over Nadindi Udangawe in straight sets in the final.

Jayasooriya however, was made to sweat it out and labour before winning in a four setter final. Jayasooriya took the first set on 14/12 but lost the second set meekily. However, he came back to clinch the next two sets in closely contested sets.

Ravindu Laksiri clinched two titles by winning the boys under-17 and 15 titles. He received a walk-over in the under-15 final but won easily in the other final.

Nadindi Udangawe clinched the girls’ under-17 title defeating Naduni Gunawardena in straight sets. But Gunawardena had earlier won the under-15 title. Viduranga Udantha took the boys under-13 title while A.M. Methsarani took the girls’ title.
