Nine-new meet records established

Colombo District Athletic Championship

Nine new meet records were established in the Colombo District Athletic Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Fresh legs in the morning saw athletes establish five new meet records in the first session.

Eleven-year-old Waruna Attanayake of Lyceum International, Wattala was the youngest to establish a new meet record in the high jump event for boy’s under-12 years. He went over the bar at 1.50 metres. The old record was 1.40 metres set last year.

I.M.H. Anupama of Kirulapone SC was impressive in the javelin throw to establish a new meet record with a throw of 38.63 meters. This is very much more than the old record of 29.89 meters set in 2004.
Nuwan Abeywickrema of Gampaha District AA lowered the time in the 400 meters event for open men event. His new time was 49.6 seconds compared to 50.4 seconds set in 2004.

Hariba Guwanthi also set a new record of 1.48 meters in the high jump event for girl’s under-20 years. The old record was 1.45 meters set in 2007. Udantha Bandara also set a new meet record in the high jump event for boy’s under-14 years. He cleared 1.65 metres compared to the previous record of 1.56 meters set in 2004.

The afternoon session saw the girls establish new records in the high jump events, while the other was in the shot putt event for boys’ under-20 years. W.A.G.D. Wickremarachchi set a new record in the Shot Putt event with a throw of 11.45 meters Ruwandi Jayawardena of Dharmapala Pannipitiya set a new high jump record of 1.45 metres for girls’ under-14 years.

Yelcia Dias of Methodist College also set a new mark in the high jump event for girls under-12 years by going over 1.35 meters. Dinya Prasadi Amunugama of Lyceum International, Wattala also established a new mark in the high jump event for girls under-16 years. She went over the bar placed 1.49 meters in height.
