Two friends and a shared love for art

They’re in it for the love of it. Two friends, both bound by a shared love- for art, whether on canvas, fabric or porcelain and so why not an exhibition to share their passion?

Zinufa Razik’s palette is warm and vibrant; her colours seem to reach out and grab you. Radhika Dias Bandaranaike is the more serene in expression, painting in mellow hues and delicate lines. Together they will hold an exhibition of their work at the Harold Peiris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt from October 1 to 3 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Radhika Zinufa

Zinufa started off at the Cora Abraham art classes and also studied under Mudliyar A.C.G.S. Amarasekera and Dora Tomulic. Herself an art teacher, she confesses that she came to oils quite late, having earlier tried out fabric painting and porcelain painting.

She has exhibited before in 1995 with her students and in 2004 when she held a very successful exhibition ‘Nubian Dreams’ inspired by a trip to Kenya. She revels in using stronger colours, a fact that is markedly evident in her rich palette. Having earlier taught at the Sapumal Foundation Zinufa currently teaches at the Ladies College Department of Vocational Studies and also gives private lessons.

Always creative, Radhika, known among her friends for her dainty hand painted cards also had her early training at the Melbourne Art Classes and learnt porcelain painting with Rohini Aluvihare, which is where she and Zinufa met. She is currently absorbed in working on water colours under the guidance of Kumari de Alwis. “I paint all the time,” she says, that is when she is not travelling, but her travels also contribute to her work for she photographs the scenes that catch her eye and then paints them at leisure.

Having not forgotten those early days when she used to sell her cards to Cargills for one rupee, Radhika will also have a set of cards with photographs of her paintings on sale at the exhibition.
