Bouquets to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and the concert organisers

September 19 was a memorable night for a particular audience of music lovers in Sri Lanka. A truly genuine artiste performed here. Though clearly unwell, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed for more than 90 minutes – with no lip syncing, no breaks, no time wasted on costume changes, and no unnecessary side shows. The show was purely Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, his musicians and his backup singers.

This world-renowned singer delighted his audience with a wonderful selection of ghazals and Hindi film songs. Without going in for long explanations, he engaged the audience in an amiable manner, without condescension. For those who did not understand the language, his music touched our souls.

While thanking the organisers for providing us with comfortable cushioned chairs and good seating, I wish to make a suggestion.

The ticket said the show would start at 7 pm, but in fact it started much later. The organisers could have told us that there would be a delay, and we could have used the time to visit the excellent food stalls and be back in our seats by 7.45 pm.

We in Colombo are quick to criticise. I therefore write as a grateful audience member who appreciated a memorable and well-organised show. It was one of those rare occasions when you felt you had not wasted your time and money. In fact, I would be happy to pay double to hear Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, should he perform again here.

N. A. Hussein, Colombo
