Fair judgement on professor-minister

I refer to the candid and thought-provoking article by Kishali Pinto Jayawardena (“Focus on Rights”, the Sunday Times, August 8).

The writer takes the External Affairs Minister to task for his boast that 50 per cent of the judges in this country are former students of his at the Law Faculty.

Does the erudite Minister expect his students, who are now judges, to be subservient to their old master at the Law Faculty? This know-all professor should not mix up his days at the Law Faculty with the political patronage he extends to the present administration.

Incidentally, the author of the article is herself a former student of the External Affairs Minister. She boldly points out her former mentor’s double talk. The Minister’s assertion that meddlesome foreigners will interfere in our internal affairs if the judiciary is attacked is pathetic and deplorable.

We expect Mr. G. L. Peiris to be more prudent and act with more accountability and responsibility.
