Political buffoonery leads to closure of BOI venture

By Hiran Priyantha Jayasinghe

A coir factory in the Puttalam district –a BOI project-- with Indian and Israeli collaboration has run into problems with a local politician interfering in the administration of the factory. The politician who allegedly took away the keys to the factory earlier this week returned them later in the day. However the incident led to the temporary closure of the factory.

The factory which employs over 100 workers has been in operation for the past four years. The Sunday Times learns the owner of the factory is due to seek an appointment with the Economic Affairs Minister Basil Rajapaksa under whose purview the BOI comes in order to discuss the issue.

The owner is currently out of the country and the local management declined to comment. However the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Jagath Samantha Perera told the Sunday Times he had intervened as employees had complained of threats to their jobs after management had decided to contract some of the work instead of having permanent employees.

Employees claimed the company was attempting to change the terms of employment on grounds the factory was suffering losses.
