Girl on mat does well in O/L exam

Remember the invalid student who answered the papers at the December GCE Ordinary Level exam lying on a mat and which was featured in the Sunday Times of December 20, 2009.

That student Theyaga Sewwandi Herath of Pithikuliya MMV has done well in her exam in spite of her disability, obtaining passes in all subjects. She has a ‘B’ for history and ‘C’s for Buddhism and Sinhala, as if to prove that physical disability cannot thwart success in life.

She lives in Awulegama on the Kurunegla-Puttalam road close to Sangabodhi MMV. Her mother B S Kumarihamy proudly told us that if her hand writing was good her results would have been better and that ordinary passes in the four other subjects made her a bit worried.

Encouraged by her friends she wants to study Mass Communication as a subject for her Advanced Level exam at a school in Kurunegala. Her mother is prepared to change residence if the situation warrants solely to encourage her daughter in her studies.

The girl hopes to seek admission to a reputed girls’ school in Kurunegala with the help of P Hettiarachchi, zonal director of education. She has not decided on the other subjects for her next exam, but said that she would do well enough to get a job.

She was thankful to the Principal of her school for the encouragement rendered to her and the staff who helped her to ignore her disability and study well.
