Mumbai Indians reign supreme over Deccan Chargers

By Fowzie Kandrekar in Chennai

The Mumbai Indians, with a commanding performance, emerged victorious over the Deccan Chargers last night. The Chargers have boasted of, from the first IPL, some of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball in the league. Clearly, the 179 set by Mumbai Indians, while not the ideal target, was very much in their sights.

Murali Vijay on his way to a blistering century for Chennai which took the game away from Rajasthan.

With Ghilchrist and Gibbs at the crease, all looked well, until Zaheer Khan came on. Tendulkar pouched Gibbs for 17, Ghilcrist was clean bowled for 19 and in-between Laxman ran himself out. From 30 for no loss to 40 for 3, the match had turned. Rohit Sharma was out to a brilliant low return catch by Keiron Pollard and when Andrew Symonds was bowled for 21, the Chargers were down to 81/5. Mishra perished for 5, and Ryan Harris was easily caught by Dhawan off McLaren for 13.

With Lasith Malinga bowling Ohja for 2, it was all over for the Deccan Chargers, being bowled out for 115. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar and Shikar Dhawan opened well for Mumbai scoring 53 off the first 6 overs. Spin and disaster came together for Mumbai with Dhawan stumped off Ohja, while Tendulkar was adjudged lbw to a slider from Rahul Sharma. When Dwayne Bravo was bowled by an arm ball from Ohja, the Mumbai Indians were reduced to 62 /3.

The young guns, Saurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu did the rebuilding process, accelerating after the thirteenth over. Even though Ohja accounted for Tiwary in the seventeenth over, the Chargers could not contain Rayudu and Pollard, allowing Mumbai to finish up at 178/5 in their 20 overs.

Could Chaminda Vaas, who was replaced by Ryan Harris, have made a difference to the result, one wondered. In the first match, Rajasthan Royals, chasing 247 runs successfully in T20 format requires a lot of things to go one’s way to win. However they were in no way disgraced.
